India’s rise as a global diamond trading centre is gaining momentum. The country’s polished diamond exports in fiscal year 2010-2011 surged 54.9 percent year-on-year to $28.3 billion, fuelled by sustained demand from Asia and the Middle East. The trade continues to make impressive gains this year. In May, India’s overall exports of cut and polished diamonds stood at $2.22 billion, up 23.52 percent over the same month a year ago, according to statistics released by the Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council.

Globally recognised as one of the world’s top suppliers of coloured gemstones, Brazil is also beginning to carve out a substantial niche for itself in the competitive world of jewellery design and production.
