- Much ado about tanzanite. After imposing a ban on the export of rough tanzanite in April, Tanzania’s Ministry of Minerals and Energy announced in September that it has temporarily lifted the embargo on tanzanite weighing more than one gram until the middle of 2011. This measure should give exporters “enough time” to develop sustainable gemstone cutting operations before a total ban is implemented in 2011, the government says.
