Under the sea: Mermaid’s Treasure Hunt

by  Jasmine Webster  posted on 29 May 2012
Decadent seabed inspired sets and mermaid-esque models sauntered down catwalks that drew inspiration from the deep blue this season.  Leaving no inch of design un-touched by tidal treasures!

Inspiration was drawn from seaweed to pearlscoral to mermaid scale and embellished the Spring/Summer'12 collections with luxury.

And any pirate would have thought he had found the 'X' on his map had of he attended these divinely accessorized shows!

Perhaps the most notable show of the season - Chanels!
The shimmer of pearllescent jewels and underwater settings at Chanel captured it's audience with a conceptual representation of the underwater theme that challenged the normal perception of  the oceans beauty.

Head designer Karl Lagerfeld sent models down the epic seabed runway in mini-mini shorts, cut from laminated denim and worn under unstructured jackets.  He showed little tops embroidered like a bed of sea anemones, jackets sensually cut along the small of the back, and dresses embroidered with bronze-colored scales - a unique vision of the ocean that moves distinctly away from the slinky & tight mermaid-inspired dresses that are so commonly thought of in respects to sea-inspired fashion.

Largerfeld matched these youthful designs with accessories that were just as radiantly sun-dipped in ocean freshness.
AND, which just like the collection, were slightly removed from the fashionable norm.

This season the ocean and all its glinting sea life references are a key draw-card for SS12 designers.

And it wasn't just Chanel that took this theme on board!  Seabed statement cocktail rings at Versace and flirty shell chandeliers at Holly Fulton paid tribute to Titans domain alongside coral embellishments at Alexander McQueen an actual mermaid model at Thom Browne!

A trend to indulge in this season - under the sea motifs and textures are essential for any jewellery trendsetter or follower, and can be adapted to suit even those without sea legs!

Sharks teeth and starfish broaches, alongside clusters of pearls and fish pendants are quite typically the most direct reference to this trend that one can wear.

However, if just like Karl Lagerfeld, your wanting to stare clear of the expected,  then look for jewels in a cool palette of mint and light blue with a tinge of peach and lilac - they note the sea movement indirectly in a superbly sophisticated, yet on trend manner.
