It’s that time of year again – summer is just around the corner! The fresh, bright green colours of summer are captured in the soft light of emerald, which conveys harmony and love of Nature.
For centuries, the green of the emerald has been the colour of beauty and constant love. In ancient Rome, green was the colour of Venus, the goddess of beauty and love. Today, the colour is still accorded a special place in many cultures and religions. For example, it is the holy colour of Islam, and has a high status in the Catholic Church.
The lively luminosity of its colour makes the emerald a unique gemstone. However, really good quality is fairly rare, with inclusions often marring the evenness of the colour. Fine inclusions, however, do not diminish the high regard in which it is held. On the contrary: even with inclusions, an emerald in a deep, lively green still has a much higher value than an almost flawless emerald of paler colour. In top quality, fine emeralds are even more valuable than diamonds.
The birthstone of May – the month of rebirth and celebration of life – emerald was used in jewellery designed for queens and princesses in the Egyptian and Indian civilizations. A pair of emerald earrings or an emerald ring is a special and thoughtful gift for that May birthday girl, and an emerald pendant makes a perfect gift on Mother’s Day!
