Tourmaline symbolizes wisdom, strength of mind and eloquence. It is the gemstone of love and friendship, and is said to render them firm and long-lasting.

The stone owes its nickname – the gem of the rainbow – to an Egyptian legend, according to which it passed a rainbow on its long journey up from the centre of the Earth and in doing so took on all the rainbow's colours. The name tourmaline comes from the Singhalese words “tura mali.” This translates as something like “stone with mixed colours,” referring to the colour spectrum of the gemstone, which can be found in almost all naturally occurring colours from red to green and from blue to yellow and which often has two or more colours in combination.

Among the most sought-after is pink tourmaline, greatly adored by Tzu-Hsi, the last empress of China. Her enthusiasm for pink tourmaline persists to the present day: tourmaline is among the most esteemed stones in China as well as an object of desire worldwide. Aficionados in the West wear pink tourmaline to attract attention and to feel more confident and make a positive impression.
