Alleged India show diamond thieves claim stones were planted

Four suspects arrested in connection with the theft of around $1 million of diamonds from the booth of Dalumi Diamonds at the India International Jewellery Show on August 23 are claiming that the diamonds were planted on them at Dubai.
Mexican nationals Guerrero Lugo Elvia Grissel, Campos Molan Elias, Gonzalez Maldonado Mauricio, and Venezulan Gutierez Orlando were extradited to India from Dubai after they took a flight from Mumbai to Hamburg via Dubai. They were detained by Dubai police following an Interpol alert.
“In the bail application, we have said that the diamonds were planted on the accused because if they actually had diamonds with them while leaving India, they would not have got clearance to fly,” their lawyer, Vivek Chauhan said.
Chauhan added that other than being seen on the CCTV footage, the police don’t have any other evidence to connect them to the crime. “They are foreigners and they could have gone to the exhibition to see the display,” said Chauhan.
In an application for bail, Chauhan said the identification parade carried out by the police would not help the investigation as the faces of the accused had already been seen in the media. The court may hear their bail application on September 16.
