Police in Beijing are investigating the theft of a diamond ring allegedly worth hundreds of thousands of dollars from a Tiffany & Co store.
Stealing at luxury jewelry store is unusual in China, where many luxury brands have established a presence in the past decade.
According to local media report, the CCTV showed he theft was a foreign national who allegedly made several reconnaissance visits to the store in the Oriental Plaza on Chang'an Avenue before stealing the ring. The man allegedly grabbed a 3-carat diamond ring, worth about 2.19 million yuan ($320,000) by distracting the only shop assistant at the store at the time, news report cited a salesman at a shop next to Tiffany as saying.
Criminals convicted of robbery involving items worth 2 million yuan could be given life imprisonment as the highest punishment.
